The Secret of Contentment

Philippians 4:8-13

“Rejoice in the Lord always. … with thanksgiving, present your requests to God … Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things … I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.”

Paul the apostle writes an amazing statement: “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.” We understand how amazing that statement is when we read about his life. Paul had times when he was the honored guest of government leaders, he had times where he was beaten by angry mobs, thrown in jail by the authorities, he suffered shipwreck at sea in the rain and cold, and many other struggles. And yet he states “I have learned to be contentwhatever the circumstances.”

In the fourth chapter of Paul’s letter to the Philippians we read the secret to that contentment:

·Rejoice in the Lord always; Finding joy in our relationship with God.

·Ask God for what you need with an attitude of thankfulness.

·Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Training our thoughts to dwell on the positive aspects that are all around us in every situation.

Contentment seems to come through the strength Jesus gives us, when we discipline our minds: to rejoice, to be thankful, to find the things that are true, noble, right, pure and lovely. It is then we may enter into that contentment whatever the circumstance.
